Reimagining Aging with Purpose and Possibility in Greenwich

Mary Louise Wallace spent most of her adult life in Greenwich, quietly living out values of kindness, generosity, and compassion. When she passed away on January 14, 2021, at the age of 82, she left behind not only cherished memories but also a transformational gift that will forever change how older adults thrive in our community.

Mary Louise was the only child of Jeanne Horton Wallace and Dr. Robert Pulley Wallace of New York City, both of whom predeceased her.  She attended Erskine College from 1956-1959 before leaving to be with her mother who was just beginning an eleven year struggle with cancer.

A lifelong educator, Mary Louise taught English in the Bethel School System for many years, where she served as a mentor to countless students.  She had a deep love for animals, a strong commitment to her community, and a heartfelt connection to the Town of Greenwich.

Mary Louise’s estate gifted $2.5 million to the Friends of the Wallace Center. This extraordinary contribution supplements existing renovation funds from the Town of Greenwich, enabling a full renovation of the Senior Center’s first floor, lower level and main entryway at 299 Greenwich Avenue.

A Transformative Gift

In recognition of this transformative gift and with the approval of the Board of Selectmen and the Representative Town Meeting, the Greenwich Senior Center program was renamed "The Mary Louise Wallace Center for Vibrant Living and Purposeful Aging".

But Mary Louise’s vision didn’t end with bricks and mortar. Her estate also pledged an additional $2.2 million for the creation and expansion of evidence-based programming—innovative, measurable and impactful programs designed to support older adults by improving health and well-being. This funding ensures the Wallace Center can offer enriched programming well beyond the limits of the Wallace Center’s municipal operational budget.

Mary Louise Wallace’s legacy is a gift of vitality, purpose and community. Her kindness will live on in every renovated space, every class taken, and every life uplifted at the Wallace Center. Her legacy will benefit thousands of older adults for generations to come. Thanks to her extraordinary generosity, aging in Greenwich has been forever reimagined.
